Only her hairdresser knows for sure....

Ok it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Wig shopping...I only teared up once. The gentleman helping me choose had obviously done this many times before. All week I’ve been looking at everyone while I was traveling trying to decide if I saw anyone wearing a wig. Nothing was overly obvious but I came to the realization that I definitely needed more than one hair piece. Not because I want something pink or blue but because there’s no way I’d ever be seen going anywhere without hair and just a hat or scarf. I couldn’t go the Greta Garbo look and ask to be left alone. It seems I’m not alone. They’ve created these hair pieces that basically look like Ben Franklin but for marketing purposes they call a “halo”. Its a headband that circles your head and hair hangs down - straight, curly whatever. You can add a hat or a scarf and voila! no one knows (well maybe). I’m planning on using that as my traveling hair for planes, trains etc. I also confirmed today that I have a petite head - this is surely the only part of my body anyone has ever called petite and I’ll take it! My new hair friend Edward suggested I search for hats in the children’s section or at Gap Kids - oh that’s will be fun - “oh miss - yes can you help me? - I’m looking for a kids hat I can wear with my Ben Franklin hair when I’m traveling??“ should be interesting...

Before we got to the “halo” piece (because I’m such an angel) let’s go back to the beginning. My daughter made this appointment when we first met with the dr and he recommended it. The walls of this shop are lined with celebrity photos all signed. You know your usual wig wearing celebs - Raquel Welch, Katie Couric, Cher - the testimonial to it’s not just for cancer patients. The display of hair is dizzying as well as the other studded covered turbans. My daughter wanted me to try the turban but I have to say the studs looked less rock and roll and more tyrannosaurus rex. I inspected the wigs on display and the hairlines looked amazingly natural. Edward explained that the technique used was originally cultivated for broadway so that from a distance you wouldn’t see the veil netting. More recently they started cutting it closer to the hairline so that everyone can enjoy great looking fake hair. I tried on a few synthetic wigs. One I saw when I entered the showroom was almost a direct match for my hair color and style. I sent a photo to my hairdresser with the wig on and she even commented how it looked exactly like my hair (put that in the keep pile). I also tried a Jenifer Aniston looking do in a red tone. I’ve always wanted to be a red head - not a bright Lucille Ball redhead but a deep chestnut color red. I remember my mom was a red head for a short time when I was growing up. I can still remember her in that white sequin dress with her red beehive hairdo. My hubby said that the red wig made me look younger! Check! Now these synthetic wigs are basically shake and go. Edward (who said hes a milliner - I didn’t know people still did that - isn’t that right out of Hello Dolly!) said he can’t do much to these color wise but he can thin it out a bit so it’s less poofy and more like my natural less is more hair. But then he pulled out the big guns! Real hair - I didn’t want to ask where it came from - but it was beautiful shiny and felt like my own. The color was blonde with dark roots and the cut was choppy like I like. Edward looked at my press photo and said he could make this wig match exactly shade and style. He also said I could curl it and straighten it or glam squad it (look it up mom). I pulled the trigger. I’ve always been an obsessive shopper and now I have to clear a shelf in my closet for the three wigs and the

Ben Franklin. In the meantime my mom has chemo this week and I’m having chemo in 5 days.
