Yes, today was the first day in 14 days that I left the house and went for a drive. I was amazed at how many cars were on the road. Like us, I guess, it being a nice day, I pushed the limits and we drove around through four towns for about an hour. All in all what I saw scared me. I’m used to seeing stores closed when we drive around on Christmas Day...this is different. The diners are closed and cars may be lined up waiting for take out. But the rest....it’s like something out of the movie Legend starring Will Smith. Desolate. Ice cream stores taking pre-orders and bringing it to your car. I wanted fresh bread for my dinner tonight, you know, crusty bread to dip in our sauce. So I convinced my hubby to take me to the Anthony and Sons bakery. Yes, I was willing to put our life on the line for bread. It was 4:56 and they closed at 5. The owner let us into the empty store and gave us a loaf of bread for no charge (his registers were closed). I found this single act of kindness touching. I have always bought in this store and will continue to do so...
I guess as much as I watch this on the news, digital papers and Facebook I still want to believe this is going to get better but I’m not sure how. It will take nothing short of a miracle to create a vaccine that will prevent the spread of this virus. It’s worse than we imagined and this short feeling of normalcy today made me long for my past life. Whoever thought we’d look longingly at the days we could go shopping at the market or any store, have our hair or nails done, sending our children to school or just generally walking around a quaint town with shops. Not me.
I actually did my nails this week. I guess Amazon considers gel polish, dryers and electric drills essential items because I could get them through Prime shipping. So I spent a few hours sanding, shaping cutting, polishing etc. Its not great (Only cut myself once) but it will do. Who’s seeing my nails anyway????
I also got another shoprite delivery. I think this has to stop. I mean it’s just the two of us and there’s no way we’re eating $500+ worth of food in a week! I’ve always had a shopping addiction. Since there’s really no reason to order clothes or shoes etc, I’ve transferred that addiction to online food ordering. It wouldn’t be that bad except that when shoprite doesn’t have an item I ordered they up size it. So my pint of fat free half and half that i use in my ONE cup of coffee each morning was upsized to A GALLON! What am I going to do with a gallon of fat free half and half?? Also the 8oz package of stuffed shells was upsized to 32 oz.!! This is McDonald’s supersize on steroids. The only thing they didn’t supersize was my hamburger buns. For some reason they were reduced to slider sizes (ha). I've already scheduled my shopping order for next week and I’m giving Wegmans Instacart a try. I’m sure shoprite will wonder what happened to me ;(). I continue to hope that all who I know and all that we love remain safe and healthy.
Dear Alisa
I know exactly how you felt seeing all the shut downs. When I ventured out for a walk after the Stay Home rule was put into place a few days,it didn’t seem real—like I was part of a cast in a movie, very eerie. This invisible enemy, the wore since 1918 is very scary. It has affected everyone. I hope folks will work together/follow the rules & get rid of this devil 👿 virus—sooner rather then later.
